Abstract

The scholarly communication landscape is rapidly transitioning toward large-scale adoption of open access as the default practice for disseminating research results. Starting with the role of open science as a fundamental approach, influencing research institutions and scientific practices, the paper highlights some policy initiatives promoted by the European Union. It then focuses on the evolution of scholarly communication, highlighting the importance of the Diamond OA model in representing the peculiarities of scientific communities. Through the analysis of European studies, initiatives and projects in the field, it is clear how the Diamond OA model is characterized by its flexibility and ability to adapt to different publishing entities, facilitating a wide and accessible dissemination of scientific research results and thus ensuring inclusive and global scholarly communication.
